Perspective shift – behind compared to whom?
There is genuine pressure to prove our legitimacy as a homeschooler. To ourselves, our family, our spouse…after all, we are choosing the road less traveled, and it’s wrought with self-doubt.
But learning is not linear,
and homeschooling is not a competition.
Each child has individual interests, strengths, and weaknesses. No two children will learn at the same pace as another. Often what kids “should” know is a function of what they need to know. If they need to know it, they will learn it eventually. Many times, learning is not achieved sitting at a desk with their nose in a book anyway. It’s in the day to day interactions we have the privilege of witnessing. The fractions learned during the baking of an apple tarte. Telling time learned from the desire to know what’s next in the day. The spelling learned when penning a letter to a pen pal, and the reading practice during nursing sessions with little siblings. It’s in these moments, that a love for learning is ignited.
The beauty of homeschooling is that we have the freedom to mold our schooling around our seasons of life. Resist the urge to create public school at home. Embrace small victories. Shout them from the rooftops. Make them a big deal. And be thankful for this incredible gift that is home education.
