DIY Hand Sanitizer

Ditch the purell and other toxic hand sanitizers and opt for this easy hand cleanser that can be made at home for pennies!

The main ingredient that is harmful in mainstream hand sanitizers is triclosan. Triclosan is a synthetic chemical with antimicrobial properties which destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi. However, it is a known endocrine disruptor and a suspected carcinogen. It's also lipophilic, which means it can bioaccumulate in your fat for long periods of time. Besides this toxic ingredient, hand sanitizer has been shown to be extremely ineffective. A 2019 study showed you had to scrub your hands for !FOUR! minutes in order to kill the flu virus. Essential oils are non toxic and proven to be way more effective!

Here's an easy tutorial for homemade hand cleanser using 3 easy ingredients, along with some glass spray bottles! I'm also posting a video tutorial to my stories with swipe ups & will save in my highlights!

Supplies:

  • vodka

  • essential oils (I'm using onguard and lemon)

  • filtered water

  • glass spray bottle

Directions:

  1. Fill glass jar with 15 drops onguard & 10 drops lemon essential oil

  2. Use a funnel to fill bottle 3/4 of the way with vodka

  3. Top with filtered water, close, shake, & voila! *I don't mind the faint vodka smell from this recipe - it doesn't linger on hands and isn't an issue, however, if you'd like, you can do 1/2 vodka, 1/2 aloe vera. If you choose this route, just make sure you pick a vodka that is 180 proof!
