Management of Mastitis

Mastitis is a clogged milk duct that leads to an infected milk duct. The best way to avoid a clogged duct progressing to mastitis is early intervention. As soon as I feel a clogged duct, I’m beginning these interventions. I’ve successfully treated mastitis a handful of times and have never needed antibiotics.

Symptoms include:

  • fever

  • lethargy

  • feeling like you have the flu

  • Hard lump on breast, sometimes red and hot to the touch

Increase water intake

Drink as much water as possible to try to clear that duct.

Vitamin C

When I've had mastitis I do high dose vitamin C via C-Salts. 1 tsp per glass of water, 2x per day.

Sunflower Lecithin

2-3x a day of the recommended dosing. I use the Legendairy Milk Brand.

Castor Oil Compresses

Wet a clean washcloth with hot water and pour 1 tbsp castor oil over it. Apply to the affected area. This helps draw out

inflammation and infection and is very soothing.

Hot Shower/Massage

Point the shower head on the breast and push/massage it out.

Raw garlic

Crush a clove with the flat part of a knife, then swallow it like a pill. 2 times daily.

Dangle Nursing

  • Get on all fours. Lay your baby down underneath you and breastfeed in that position. It feels ridiculous and yes, you look like an actual cow, but it helps the clog to release.

  • Make sure your baby's nose is pointed toward the location of the clog.

Earthley Milk Flowin’ Salve

Rub a small amount onto the lump or sore spot. Use code PURELY10 for 10% off.

Homeopathic remedy

  • Belladonna 30c

  • Phytolacca 30c

  • Hepar Sulph 30c
